PROTEST OF SILENCE | FOR L'AQUILA

6TH APRIL 2011
MONTECITORIO SQUARE
4,00 PM

_
The Protest of Silence is back to remark upon the fact mere words seem to have lost their dignity and strength and their capacity to change the future.

On the 6th of April 2009 an earthquake shook the district of L'Aquila, annihilating her past and present and eroding the cultural heritage of her Community. Two full years later L'Aquila is still a ghost town, a victim not just of the terrible natural tragedy, but also a victim of the many rhetorical speeches which followed. Fine but ultimately hollow words with little or no actual follow up. Words which even, in part, masked the cry of the real underlying suffering.

The Protest of Silence is in sympathy with the victims of this tragedy. Its aim is to remind the Authorities, the media and the people of Italy that words alone do not heal the wounds and damage suffered by the victims and survivors of L'Aquila.

The Protest of Silence marks the second anniversary of L'Aquila's earthquake with the words of the poet Hugo Mujica «in the depths are no roots but only what has been rooted out». These verses express the tragedy of a population which lives in dignity and patience but still lacks houses, hospitals, schools and churches, memory and heritage.

WHO WE ARE
_
The Protest of Silence is an independent, non-political community which began in Rome in February 2011. Its aim is to use silence to reclaim the importance of the Word whose overuse undermines Democracy.
